Mumbai Indians Finally Open Account in IPL 8; Log 18 Run Win on Royal Challengers Bangalore

mi1New Delhi, Monday, April 20 – Post 4 consecutive defeats in the brand new season of Indian Premier League, Mumbai Indians finally opened their account with a victory in a match played against Royal Challengers Bangalore on Sunday at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore. In a stadium where several people turned up to see a good contest and supported the home team, it was Mumbai Indians that made use of the opportunity in the best way possible.

The toss was won by RCB skipper Virat Kohli, who decided to field first against the MI. The decision seemed getting appropriate when wicketkeeper-batsman Parthiv Patel succumbed to David Wiese after hitting two classy boundaries, giving his team a good start. In spite of losing first wicket early, Mumbai Indians kept the calm and looked confident in more than a few aspects. Partnership between Lendl Simmons and Unmukt Chand made MI gain foothold and not repeat the same old story they did in this year’s IPL. Before Yuzvendra Chahal compelled them go back to the pavilion, the opener struck 59 runs of 44 balls (4 x 9 and 6 x 2) and the 22-year-old Chand hit 58 runs in just 37 balls, which comprised a couple of biggies and eight incredible fours.

Same momentum was kept up by Rohit Sharma. Thrashing the bowling attack of Royal Challengers Bangalore and giving its bowlers a good lesson, Sharma sent the balls into the fences many times. His 42-run inning in a crucial contest in opposition to the men in red caps came in only 15 balls, together with 3 fours and 4 sixes. Despite not getting any needed support from Kieron Pollard (5 runs off 3 balls; 4 x 1) and Ambati Rayudu (0 run), the Mumbai Indians’ captain ensured of putting a big total on the score board after 20 overs.

Wiese let RCB come back in the game by dismissing Pollard, Rayudu and Sharma in the same over but that hardly brought any difference. Harbhajan Singh, who made the world familiar with his great batting skills earlier, turned a run out victim in view of the fact that Manvinder Bisla hit the stumps before Singh was in crease. Thanks to Hardik Pandya’s knock of 16 runs off 6 balls (6 x 2), Mumbai Indian were able to accumulate 209 runs with an average of 10.45 runs per over.

Chasing the target wasn’t too difficult for RCB especially at a time when Chris Gayle, the hard hitter of the ball, is in the ‘playing XI’. However, it was not his day to shine given that he demonstrated a Test-like play, completely failing to get a clue how to tackle with MI’s perfect bowling. The play of Manvinder Bisla (20 runs off 16 balls; 4 x 3 & 6 x 1) was ended by Harbhajan Singh, who also took vital wicket of Gayle (10 runs in 24 balls), giving MI a chance to get a grip in the match. Mitchell McClenaghan gave a quick jolt to Kohli who was out at the score of 18 with one boundary and a six. The wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik pocketed similar score as that of his team’s captain with same number of shots.

AB de Villiers once again exhibited a brilliant knock of 41 runs in 11 balls. He was almost on the way to take first opportunity of winning from MI far away. Rilee Rossouw fell short to Singh in the first ball of 14th over, offering no support to Villiers at a time when RCB appeared to be logging win by a inch. David Wiese and Villiers geared up to lay the foundation for Royal Challengers Bangalore to be victorious at the end. They felt the ease playing Lasith Malinga, McClenaghan and others. The bowling change did a trick for MI as Jasprit Bumrah earned 31-year-old Villiers wicket at a perfect time.

Story changed all of sudden despite the fact that Wiese kept on trying to take his squad close to the target. 6 fours and 2 sixes, some quick singles and twos are adequate to define his class. Iqbal Abdulla, who struck 20 runs along with 4 boundaries, was a bit unlucky when Rohit Sharma threw the ball towards the wicket at a time when the batsman was slightly away from the white line. Game was nearly all over for RCB when Abu Nechim came to bat with Wiese who stayed unbeaten in 20th over. Brilliant fielding by MI helped them earn 2 points in the points table.

To double the fun, two matches were scheduled yesterday wherein Rajasthan Royals, continuing their superb form, inflicted a shocking 8-wicket defeat on Chennai Super Kings. Delhi Daredevils will make efforts to take the advantage of playing at home against Defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders at Feroz Shah Kotla, Delhi, on Monday. According to latest standings of the teams, RR is leading the table with 10 points. CSK hold second spot, while KKR and DD third and fourth ranks respectively. Several changes might soon be seen as IPL enters into exciting stages. As of now, fans are backing their favorite teams and enjoying the competition between eight teams of IPL 8.
