Chennai Super Kings Defend Small Total to Pocket 2-Run Win over Kolkata Knight Riders, Doeschate’s Efforts Go in Vain

csk5New Delhi, Wednesday, April 29 – The brand new season of Indian Premier League is grabbing eyeballs thanks to the interesting contests going on among the eight participating squads. Kolkata Knight Riders & Chennai Super Kings fetched attention of the cricket fans on Tuesday at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, where the men in yellow shirts defeated the IPL season 7 winners by 2 runs.

The chances of winning oscillated equally between the two teams but at the end, it was Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s boys who stood tall against the pressure. Kolkata Knight Riders put best foot forward while fielding first as the skipper Gautam Gambhir got the chance to make a decision after winning the toss against CSK. The choice to elect bowling helped them curb Chennai Super Kings at 134 runs for the loss of 6 wickets.

Dwayne Smith (25 runs of 19 balls; 4 x 3 & 6 x 1) and Brendon McCullum (19 runs of 11 balls; 4 x 3 & 6 x 1) opened the innings for CSK but can’t stay for long on the crease as KKR were brilliant with bowling attack.  Piyush Chawla ended McCullum’s play in 4.4 overs, while Smith was a run out victim after Yusuf Pathan did not delay in sending the ball towards the stump before batsman was in.

Suresh Raina and Faf du Plessis contributed 17 runs off 21 balls (4 x 2 & 6 x 1) and 29 runs of 29 balls (4 x 1), respectively. Raina had to depart post succumbing to Andre Russell but du Plessis remained on the 22 yards pitch to accumulate as many as runs possible in 20 over game. Wicketkeeper-batsman Dhoni only added 3 runs in the team’s total score as he did not read Russell’s line and length properly. Piyush Chawla gave a quick breakthrough to his teammates by taking wicket of Dwayne Bravo (5 runs with one boundary), who could have been dangerous especially in the last few overs had the bowler not been able to trap him in a superb delivery.

Although, the new batsman Ravindra Jadeja played a knock of 15 runs in 20 balls but he once again did not succeed in exhibiting the kind of play for which he is a crucial part of  Chennai Super Kings. Brad Hogg showed him a way back to the pavilion. Ravichandran Ashwin was absolurely outstanding, hitting the ball towards the fences twice to score 9 runs in 4 balls. With the run rate of 6.7 and 12 extras, CSK were able to cross the mark of 130.

Interesting bowling by Chennai Super Kings added to the spice when Kolkata Knight Riders came to chase a feeble target. KKR captain Gautam Gambhir was out for a duck while facing the first ball. Ishwar Pandey was the man to give an early jolt to the group that gained momentum last year to win the grand finale against Kings XI Punjab even after not performing up to the mark in the UAE leg.

The opener Robin Uthappa seemed unstoppable at one stage as he struck 6 fours and 1 six in 17 balls to accumulate 34 runs. It was Ashwin’s excellence in bowling that probably made the game to tilt slightly towards CSK. Manish Pandey fell short to the same man and played 15-run inning, which comprised a couple of boundaries. Mohit Sharma finished 16-run stint of Suryakumar Yadav in his spell. The dangerous player Yusuf Pathan just managed to add 13 runs in view of the fact that Bravo compelled him go back through fantastic bowling.

Ryan ten Doeschate did his best to keep up the pace of getting runs but wickets continued to fall at the other end. The entire story changed when Pat Cummins, Piyush Chawla and Umesh Yadav were out at zero apiece. Pressure certainly shifted on Kolkata Knight Riders. Brad Hogg was successful in saving his wickets, giving right-handed batsman Doeschate a chance to opt for attacking mode. He even did so in Bravo’s last over by hitting a wonderful 6 and placing the balls intelligently to get two boundaries. However, that wasn’t adequate. KKR lost a match that was in their grip right from the beginning.

Beating Kolkata Knight Riders a day ago, Chennai Super Kings are now at the leading spot by replacing Rajasthan Royals. The defending champions KKR remain at no. 3 position with 7 points in 7 matches, while the two-time IPL trophy winners CSK jumped to the top position with 12 points in hand. Brendan McCullum’s fielding made him win INR 1 Lakh. Eyes can’t be closed to Bravo’s brilliance that changed to the entire equation, enabling CSK taste another victory in an IPL match.
