New Study Finds: Children Exposed to Second Languages Are Better Language Learners
91% of children who are exposed to a second language have a much easier time learning the language than adults.

July 16th, 2020 – Toronto, Ontario – According to an independent study from the Spanish language tutoring service, SpanishVIP, 91% of children who are exposed to a second language have a much easier time learning the language than adults. SpanishVIP surveyed its students to track their Spanish language learning progress via a formal assessment.

The same study also revealed that 84% of children made more progress in their first three months of learning Spanish as a beginner. Only 18% of kids who grew up exposed to a second language said they felt comfortable early on in their Spanish classes

“This is a revealing study,” said Connor Ondriska, co-founder of SpanishVIP. “It drives home the idea that early exposure to non-native languages can give someone a better opportunity to learn languages later on in life. As a parent, exposing your child to foreign cultures and media can be a powerful tool for their education.”

Spanish is the second most popular language in the world, with 460 million native speakers. It even surpasses English, which comes in at third place with 379 million native speakers.

“As globalization increases, the demand for multilingual employees is rising,” said Mr. Ondriska. “Developed countries need to expose their children to other languages like Spanish. If children can become fluent in a second language by adulthood, then more economic opportunities will be available to them.”

SpanishVIP is a Toronto-based company that has already taken the lead in this endeavor. It is an online Spanish language tutoring service that is available to children and adults from any country. It connects students to a native Spanish speaker who serves as their online tutor. Each student gets to participate in a one-on-one class with their tutor via video conferencing software.

“SpanishVIP gives students real-world Spanish lessons from native speakers,” said Mr. Ondriska. “Every student will have access to a class that is customized around their goals and objectives for learning Spanish. Some students may want to learn basic conversational words and phrases, while others may want to become fluent speakers. Our tutors will structure the class to meet whatever goals the students wish to achieve.”

Students are entitled to weekly structured classes with a dedicated teacher who will work with them individually. With distance learning becoming more popular amid the COVID-19 crisis, the number of language learners studying in online Spanish classes is expected to grow exponentially in the coming months.
