Sexual abuse survivor, Rosalia Rivera, overcomes her personal barriers and launches an online program aimed to help survivor parents protect their children

1 out of every 5 girls, and 1 out of every 20 boys is a victim of sexual abuse. Children who are victims of sexual abuse tend to develop a low self esteem, become mistrustful and can become depressed throughout their lives. Rosalia Rivera, a consent educator and the founder of CONSENTparenting™, made it her mission to educate other survivor parents on how to protect their children from predators, both online and offline. Rosalia said, “I want parents to know that there are many ways to prevent sexual abuse and confidently educate their children.”

Growing up, Rosalia experienced sexual abuse herself. From her experience, she learned that sexual abuse had severe effects on her and her family. Trauma has been intergenerational in her family, where it affected everyone deeply in her family. After becoming a mother, and dealing with anxiety about protecting her own children – which led her to learn how to educate her children about body safety and consent – she made it her mission to teach other survivors how to regain their confidence while overcoming their barriers.

With over 1,600 followers (and quickly growing) on Instagram, Rosalia is inspiring the online space to become educated about consent culture. She is also the host and founder of AboutCONSENT™, one of the only podcasts that provides advice for caregivers and parents through the experiences of survivors and diverse experts in the field of mental health.

The launch of CONSENTparenting™ is gaining the attention of parents and caregivers. Dr. Rocio Rosales Meza, an expert in counselling psychology says, “I recommend this to all parents, it should be a gift to all expectant parents to protect our most sacred gift, our children.” Dismantling the shame around sexuality is also an issue many parents have. As opposed to attending sexual education classes in person, parents can educate themselves online through CONSENTparenting™.

The launch of CONSENTparenting™ ignites parents to take empowered action. It dives deep into effective ways they can confidently teach their kid(s) about body safety, boundaries and consent. Rosalia says, “My mission is to eradicate child sexual abuse the way we eradicated polio”, and she’s certainly on the path.
