Mario GötzeBrazil, Monday, July 14 – The goal in extra time made Germany to be the new football World Champion. The FIFA World Cup 2014, the contest that lasted for almost a month, has finally ended having the new winners ‘Germany’. In the final match that took place between Argentina and Germany at Estádio Maracanã, Rio de Janeiro, a few hours ago, the 22-year-old German footballer Mario Götze turned the entire game into the favor of his team that once seemed going to be into the penalty shoot-out round.

In the nerve-racking match, both the squads performed at their level best. It is because of their brilliant team efforts that restricted them from hitting the ball into the net. The men in white and blue shirts weren’t able to hit a goal in both the first and second half times. Gonzalo Higuaín goal, which he struck in 20th minute of the match, was ruled out offside. This left the team and supporters in a state of disbelief.  Despite the attempt by this 26-year-old forward went in vain, it was still predicted that Argentina would be back into the game in next to no time and it got clear when Germans failed to take the lead in the first 45 minutes. Nothing came out in the second half as well.

As soon as the match entered into the extra time, a mix of tension and excitement was seen in the viewers’ stand. Die-hard football fans were almost set to see amazing fun of penalty shoot-out, however, Mario Götze’s volley which came in the 113th minute of the ET turned decisive for Germany. Game was nearly all-over for Argentina the moment a surprising goal was hit, giving no chance to Sergio Romero to stop it.

The youngster became the nation’s hero as his goal imparted terrific role in making Germany to win their fourth World Cup title.  The entire Argentine team, inclusive of Zabaleta, Demichelis, E Garay, M. Rojo, Mascherano, E. Lavezzi, Angel di María, M. Andújar, Campagnaro, A Orión etc, was inconsolable. On the other hand, German stars Schweinsteiger, M Klose, Mertesacker, T. Müller, T. Kroos, T. Kroos, P. Lahm, M. Hummels and others took time to realize that they are actually the ‘victors’ and going to lift the winner’s trophy.  In another game, which took place on Saturday, July 12, Netherlands thrashed the hosting country Brazil with the score of 3-0 for third place. The Argentine skipper Lionel Messi was awarded ‘Golden Ball’, while 27-year-old goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was given Golden Glove award for his best saves in the 2014 World Cup tournament. Midfielder James Rodriguez of Colombia was honored with the Golden Boot being top scorer with six goals.
