argentinaBrazil, Thursday, July 10 – Finally, the moment for which a number of soccer fans have been waiting from long arrived as soon as Argentina thrashed Netherlands at Arena Corinthians, São Paulo, a few hours ago. The result neither came in the full-time nor in the extra time. It was the penalty shootout that made Argentina to book berth in the grand final of FIFA World Cup 2014, which is to take place on July 13.

The stadium was jam packed. Orange and blue-white shirts were prominently visible. The massive crowd kept on jumping and cheering, maintaining the momentum of the match when the game was on. It was a nerve-wracking contest for both the players and audience. A minor mistake could have made the squads to be out of the tournament during the early session only. However, the way all footballers and the two goalkeepers performed was something to be praised for decades to come.

When no goals were hit in the 90 minute time, it was expected that either Argentina or Holland will make best use of the extra time, but it also ended with no outcome. The ‘men in blue’ made several efforts to send the ball into the net but did not succeed in doing so. In the final minutes of the extra time, ball remained for long with Netherlands’ squad, letting die-hard football fans believe that final show is perhaps going to be between Germans and the Dutch. Nonetheless, it was best efforts of the enthusiastic Argentina that made the semi-final match to be decided in the penalty shootout.

Ron Vlaar was the first man to hit the ball but was stunned when Argentine goalkeeper Sergio Romero deflected it. Then arrived 27 year old Lionel Andrés Messi on the field and scored 1st goal for his team as Jasper Cillessen failed to make out where he is going to strike. Arjen Robben equalized the goal making Argentina think that they are not going to give up so easily. Ezequiel Garay scored another goal for Argentina. The Dutch footballer Wesley Sneijder missed the hit, heightening the tension for Holland supporters. Sergio Agüero  showed a sign of victory by hitting a goal for his team. Dirk Kuyt of Netherlands scored 2nd goal but game was over for them as soon as the Argentine footballer Maxi Rodríguez struck the ball into the net. It was the moment to capture forever in memories as Argentina reached to the World Cup final after 24 years. Sergio Romero turned a nation’s hero as he imparted huge role in stopping the ball, which was hit hard by the Holland strikers.

Now, Germany will face Argentina’s attack to fight for soccer’s international title while Brazil and Netherlands will compete against each other on July 12 for 3rd and 4th rank. A victory here can only give comfort to the hosting country, which dreamt of winning the trophy in front to home crowd. Though the defeat what Brazil faced against Germany a day ago is something football fans would not be able to forget for coming years, but they are looking forward to console fans by pocketing a victory over Holland. The match between these two teams will take place on Saturday, June 12.
