argentineSão Paulo, Wednesday, July 2 – Audience present at Arena Corinthians, São Paulo, and those who glued to their TV screens witnessed a nail-biting football match between Argentina and Switzerland on Tuesday. Despite showing good show for the 90 minutes, both the team failed to send the ball into the net. The result came out in the extra time as soon as 26 year old Angel Di Maria hit the winning goal for Argentina after getting a brilliant pass by Lionel Messi.

For Argentina fans, it was worth watching the contest, which was in the final stage of knockout clash. The biggest fear for contesting teams in ‘Round of 16’ was the elimination. In the decisive match, where both the squads looked equally talented to be through to the quarterfinals, it was not easy for Argentina to score a goal and log a dramatic 1-0 win over the Switzerland.

The team in red shirts left no stone unturned to stop Messi, who have been outstanding throughout the tournament with 4 goals, from hitting the goal any further. They even succeeded in this regard, but, possibly their focus just towards 27 year old brilliant striker made them face the defeat, which will surely keep them have sleepless nights for several years to come. The next round for the winners would be challenging as the defender Marcos Rojo, who imparted terrific role in thrashing Nigeria in the previous match, has been suspended for one match after getting yellow card twice. Roaring sound in the stadium proved how immensely viewers were waiting for their team to win. However, Argentina’s victory brought huge disappointment not only for Swiss, but also for Brazil fans – who were cheering for Switzerland.

In another match played on the same day, Belgium ended hopes of United States to enter in the top 8 by scoring two goals. As like the earlier match, the teams did not succeed in pocketing a goal, but it was due to the young and enthusiastic Romelu Lukaku and Kevin De Bruyne who gave new life to their squad by booking a berth into the Top-8 with their hits in the extra time. Though US made efforts to equalize the numbers of goals, nonetheless, were able to hit just one. With this crush, their journey in FIFA World Cup 2014 title fizzled out.

With the completion of knockout stage, the teams that have entered in the other round to compete for soccer’s international title are Netherlands, Costa Rica, Argentina, Belgium, Germany, France, Brazil and Columbia.  Quarterfinals will start from Friday, July 4. The final has been scheduled to take place on July 13.
